2012-2013 Survey

Each year we send our Induction Tutors and Mentors a brief survey to obtain their views about the IStip service, including training courses offered, and the quality assurance visit. 199 of 760 Induction Tutors that were emailed completed the 2012-13 survey (26%).

1. Communication

IStip email contact:

  • Good: 83%
  • Satisfactory: 10.5%
  • Poor: 0.5%
  • No contact: 6%

Telephone contact:

  • Good: 55%
  • Satisfactory: 4%
  • Poor: 1%
  • No contact: 40%

If you rate either as ‘poor’, could you say why?

  • There were several occasions when myself and NQTs were trying to get in contact and failed for sometimes several days at a time.
  • When answered the advice etc was always excellent but often queries were not answered through either medium.

Other comments:

  • Email absolutely Excellent – your response is rapid, and helpful
  • A prompt response, quickly put through to a person who can deal with queries.

2. Quality Assurance

Has your school had a Quality Assurance visit in the past year?:

  • Yes: 50%
  • No: 50%

If yes, was it helpful? (93 responses):

  • Yes: 97%
  • No: 3%

Any additional comments regarding the visit?

  • Very thorough and provided good affirmation for all involved in induction at the school. Sound advice given too.
  • As a school new to IStip it was reassuring to have a quality assurance visit within the first term to ensure we were carrying out the process correctly.
  • It was very helpful to talk to someone who had been an experienced Induction Co-ordinator.
  • Your QA Assessor was rather pedantic and negative about our paperwork.

3. Training

Have you attended IStip training this year?:

  • Yes: 53%
  • No: 47%

Was it helpful? (79 responses):

  • Yes: 100%
  • No: 0%

Any additional comments regarding the training?

  • The handouts were fabulous and the colour coding of the papers really helped. I have also found the paper drawn up from delegates ideas on the 8 standards extremely useful
  • I would say it is essential for any new mentor or induction tutor to attend, there is so much information that it would be difficult to cascade effectively in school. Q and A during the course of the day is also very helpful. I insist that each SM attends and all have expressed how valuable the day has been.
  • A lot of the information was already available in online downloads

4. IStip Paperwork/Pro Formas

Have you found this helpful?? (185 responses):

  • Yes: 99%
  • No: 1%

Which particular forms did you find most useful?

  • All of them. I put together a pack of all the forms and then have an in house training session with individual Subject Mentors. By using a colour coding system, similar to the one provided at your training sessions this allows me to be quick and efficient in getting across the necessary details of the administrative process.
  • The examples of how to fill in the forms.
  • I have found it helpful to work with electronic versions of the ADP (easy to update for NQT and for mentor to add comments) and lesson observation form (draft filled in during lesson and then edited later).

Any other comments regarding the paperwork?

  • The standards seem more sensible and we are jumping through less hoops just for the sake of it – we can concentrate more on the central important aspects of teaching in the classroom. Half term reviews, assessments and links to the standards and ADP seem to have a greater and more sensible emphasis than previously.
  • Although I am sure there are those who think there is too much paperwork to be completed, I think it is useful paperwork and done correctly can make the completing of the assessment a straightforward process.
  • The agenda /minutes form for the regular meetings is a little long and some of the boxes are repetitive.

5. Online NQT Manager

Have you registered an NQT onto the NQT Manager system this year? (94 responses):

  • Yes: 94%
  • No: 4%

Have you found the system easy to access? (185 responses):

  • Yes: 100%
  • No: 0%

Have you found the system easy to use? (183 responses):

  • Yes: 96%
  • No: 3%

Have you any additional comments about NQT Manager?

  • Having a username as a random combination of letters and numbers makes it hard to access as no one can remember the login… perhaps E-mail addresses would make a better username?
  • It is a useful point of reference and central record. It is reassuring to see it all there and know that everything is up to date. Being able to track progress is excellent.. The warning about the time out on the assessment input screens was appreciated but I found it fine to use.
  • Some of the automatically generated emails are pretty random. Sometimes they arrive, sometimes they don’t, sometimes they arrive twice, etc.
  • The time period for part-time staff does not always seem to be calculated correctly but has always been modified when this has been queried.
  • Did not get notifications for the Spring term that the assessments were available for completion until well into the Summer term so past the deadline.

6. IStip website

Have you visited www.istip.co.uk this year?

  • Yes: 91%
  • No: 9%

Have you found the website easy to access? (179 responses):

  • Yes: 99%
  • No: 1%

Have you found the website easy to use? (177 responses):

  • Yes: 98%
  • No: 2%

Have you any additional comments about www.istip.co.uk?

  • Very handy having links to standards and new regs on one of the initial pages.
  • Could have easier links to booking courses
  • The improvements made to the site this year have really simplified things from a support/administration aspect. Information is easy to find and retrieve.
  • Easy to use, though annoying to have to agree to terms and conditions every time you go to the resources section.

7. Is there any further support we could offer you?

  • Knowledge of other schools in our area who have NQTs , to help develop training sessions
  • You could make the process less administrative and reduce the number of forms to fill in!

8. Do you have any other comments about IStip?

  • As a first time Induction Tutor I think the system works extremely well. It is so much better having a programme which is more tailored to the Independent school system.
  • It matters a lot when you get a personal email back about the quality of your reports!
  • The staff on the bat phone are always very helpful indeed; a human touch which is hugely appreciated.
  • According to my NQT, the conferences have been excellent. She fed back to us about some inspirational speakers and enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with other NQTs.

If you rate the IStip Handbook as ‘poor’ please could you say why?

  • Very professional and thorough. Good communication before visit. Helpful and supportive feedback.

Any additional comments regarding the training?

  • I was very impressed with the training days – the delivery was concise and pragmatic to the needs of mentors.
  • Despite the new standards, much of the material remains the same eg the proformas for experienced. It might be possible to run a condensed twilight session.
  • Excellent! Most helpful and informative course I have done for a long while.
  • Maybe there could be a distinction between old hands training and training for new mentors?

5. NQT Manager (England only)

    (2009-10: 38.7%; 2010-11: 93%)

Have you found the system easy to use?:

  • No: 8%
    (2009-10: 21.2%; 2010-11: 11%)

Have you any additional comments about NQT Manager?

  • It is not always reliable re calculation of assessment dates for part-timers in proportion to their contract time.
  • Is the time out facility a necessity?
  • The cycle of emails sent to head/NQT manager/NQT needs addressing – It is irregular and unpredictable. Sometimes reminders are sent, sometimes they aren’t.
  • Still find the ‘boxes’ to fill in very un-user friendly. Too small, font not good, constantly have to scroll up and down. Pain! Can’t we have a system which simply up-loads the completed file?
  • I thought there used to be automatic email alerts to NQTs to say the assessment was ready for them to add their comments and further email alerts that the assessment was ready for digital signatures. That did not seem to work for the summer Term 3 assessment.

6. New IStip website

Have you found the website easy to access?:

  • Yes: 96%
  • No: 4%

Have you found the website easy to use?:

  • Yes: 95%
  • No: 5%

Have you any additional comments about www.istip.co.uk?

  • Super for accessing proformas.
  • The bits that I want are the appendices so it would be useful if they were easier to find!
  • Government websites have updated and your links no longer connect straight to e.g. core standards.
  • I’d like another exemplar assessment form, please. Perhaps less glowing?
  • Navigation around the website could be a little more straightforward.

7. Is there any further support we could offer you?

  • Greater feedback on why submitted forms are returned –and guidance on what format/wording is required.
  • I’d quite like ideas about how schools organise their NQT year in terms of training and so on. Perhaps a forum on the website? Good practice/ events and so on.
  • Courses North of Birmingham please!
  • I think the support offered is currently very good.

8. Do you have any other comments about IStip?

  • IStip have been wonderful this year and have given all the support that we needed. (Thank you!)
  • You’re brilliant! Everyone is immensely helpful, efficient, organised and sensible – by far the best organisation I deal with regularly. I always look forward to your training days as they are so clear, well structured and explained, with a sound sense of proportion and really helpful resources. Thank you!
  • The email communication, the website and the induction meetings in London were particularly excellent.
  • Personalized feedback (via e-mail) on the quality of assessment reports and NQT comments was very helpful
